Full Professor of Odontostomatological Diseases (SSD MED/28) at the Vita-Salute San Raffaele University of Milan, he has held the position of Rector since 8 November 2018 and Vice-Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Vita-Salute San Raffaele University.
Prior to his appointment as Rector, he had been, at the same University, Vice Rector for Institutional Relations, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, President of the Master’s Degree Course in Dentistry and Dental Prosthetics and Director of the Oral Surgery certification school.
He is Director of the Dentistry Department of the San Raffaele Hospital in Milan, former Member of the National Planning Commission at the Ministry of Health from 2008 to 2011 and regular Member of the Superior Health Council from 2010 to 2013 as representative of the dental area until August 2013. In the same period he was appointed by the Health Minister Mr. Fazio as national dentistry representative of all Italian dentists at institutional and private professional level. Since 2012 he has been a member of the “Technical Dentistry Group” of the Ministry of Health Department of Public Health and Innovation, established with directorial decree (DD) of 24 May 2012 and renewed with DD of 23 January 2014.
From January 2015 to December 2018 he was President of the National College of University Teachers of Odontostomatological Disciplines.
From 10 April 2020 he has been Coordinator of the technical board of the Italian Ministry of Health relating to the “operational indications for dental care during phase 2 of the Covid-19 pandemic”, a satellite unit of the Central Technical Scientific Committee (CTS).
Since 30 September 2020 he has been a member of the National Observatory on Specialized Medical Training of the Ministry of University and Research.
He is currently Coordinator of the Technical Board of the Ministry of Health for dental care training, research and activity planning, appointed by Decree of the Head of Cabinet of the Minister of Health on 5 November 2020.
Since December 2020 he has been President of the Board of Directors of the Palazzo Arese Borromeo European Cultural Centre Association
Scientific publications: Prof. Gherlone is the Author of 383 publications of which 239 articles with impact factor, 5 monographic volumes and 8 book chapters. Bibliometric parameters H-index (Scopus) = 34, H-index (Google Scholar) = 43, 5892 citations in total
